Although it is possible that walnut might work for the whole instrument, I wouldn't bet on it. This week my son was picked to learn the violin at his school so my thoughts have naturally returned to making him a good enough instrument to practice on at least. George Buchanan's "Making Stringed Instruments, A Workshop Guide" (http://www.amazon.com/Making-Stringed-Instruments-Workshop-Guide/dp/0806974648 ) is a good primer and has a great chapter on shop-made luthier tools.

Good luck with your journey. I cannot recall any post on any woodworking blog that I have enjoyed more. Thank you.

While I have little interest in luthiery per se, I find the tools and techniques of that craft enchanting.

I've had prototypes of my own cast metal finger planes sitting in the drawer for years awaiting my return to them, and this post might be the impetus I needed.Don Williamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05384827896574453792noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3554186870925500720.post-47518297067344864562015-10-09T06:56:45.015-04:002015-10-09T06:56:45.015-04:00I wouldn't mind making a complete instrument o...I wouldn't mind making a complete instrument out of walnut, but the problem with this walnut is it has two many cracks and delaminations through the layers because I did such a poor job of taking care of it. But it's good practice material.

It definitely bends easily. It'll be interesting to saw up some of the yard maples I have into rib stock and see how they compare.Steve Branamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10526202082032043903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3554186870925500720.post-3443578955248667592015-10-09T06:53:09.918-04:002015-10-09T06:53:09.918-04:00YES! Wouldn't it be nice...

But now after a few more years of experience and seeing the details laid out in these videos, it's much more achievable, one skill at a time.Steve Branamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10526202082032043903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3554186870925500720.post-45323864946528708452015-10-08T23:53:53.739-04:002015-10-08T23:53:53.739-04:00Well...if you aren't going to use maple, Walnu...Well...if you aren't going to use maple, Walnut is a good choice. I am told that it is one of the easier woods to bend. And it will probably make a fine-sounding violin, too. It certainly works well for guitars.GreggStephanieandBrian's Dadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03481276544603482352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3554186870925500720.post-81702871301480202122015-10-08T22:51:22.127-04:002015-10-08T22:51:22.127-04:00Excellent work Steve, this is a project I've...Excellent work Steve, this is a project I've had on my list since visiting the shop at NBSS and seeing them building these beautiful instruments.
